Quondam Couple Reaches Fitness Milestone with Heart and Determination
We’re thrilled to celebrate two of our own here at Quondam Retirement Village, Frank Teixeira and Joyce Sprong, who recently completed their 100th Parkrun! This incredible achievement, built over the course of several years, is not just a testament to their commitment to staying active, but also an inspiration to all of us.
Every Saturday morning, rain or shine, Frank and Joyce lace up their shoes and head to a Parkrun—often at Gillooly’s Farm or Modderfontein—to join a supportive community of runners and walkers. “Parkrun has kept us active, motivated and connected with wonderful people along the way,” they said. “It’s something we look forward to every week.”
Their journey into Parkrun began as a shared commitment to health, but it’s grown into something far deeper. “The regular movement has definitely boosted both our physical and mental wellbeing,” Joyce noted. “It gives us energy, clears the mind, and sets the tone for the rest of the week.”
While both have always enjoyed an active lifestyle—Frank having worked in a physically demanding job before retiring, and Joyce being an avid walker—the structure and social element of Parkrun added a new layer of enjoyment. “We’ve met so many lovely people over the years and made some beautiful memories together,” Frank shared.
When asked what keeps them coming back, even after 100 events, the answer was simple: “The sense of achievement, the friendships, and the joy of doing something positive together.”
Reaching the 100th Parkrun was an emotional moment. “Crossing that finish line together was very special,” said Joyce. “We treated ourselves to a celebratory breakfast afterwards and reflected on how far we’ve come.”
As for what’s next? “We’re aiming for 150 Parkruns now—and who knows, maybe even 200!” they laughed.
Their advice to others in the village? “It’s never too late to start. Find something active that you enjoy and just begin. One step at a time can lead to amazing places.”
Frank and Joyce’s journey is a shining example that age is no barrier to setting new goals and living life to the fullest.
